A welfare state for home owners

Following on from the post on the welfare state for landlords, now the government wants to keep house prices high by engaging in mortgage lending.  It’s off topic, I know, but if the government felt no need to control prices on the way up then why the sudden rush to prop it up?

Those of us who have been around housing for a few years may recall that in the past -even up to the late 80’s local council’s were able to offer mortgages. They still have under their “welling being” powers the ability to do this. My neighbour got her mortgage from the GLC! Why should’nt progressive organisations and council’s have the ability to lend to couples and those seeking to get a ‘toe’ on the housing ladder for those that want to. This is I feel going to be a feature in the future.
